Colored ink and technical pen on water-colour paper

58cm x 41cm

The abstract is inspired by New Zealand artist Bill Hammond’s (1947-2021) Radio On 1990 which features the uninhibited notion of music affecting people. Under the genre of interior landscape, the painting exhibits a Social and Personal Function. The compositional design of the background is formulated through the accumulation of personal social gatherings taken place throughout the artist’s life by constructing linear lines and shapes to provide an impression of people and architecture. Meanwhile, the abstracted geometric linework in the foreground are a combination of Radio On figures and the artist’s personal encounters of people in the midst of movement and dance. Considering the artwork captures a similar liberated effect to Radio On where figures are captured during dance, it serves a Social Function. Additionally, the linear pattern divides the flat surface to represent an interior landscape similar to Bill Hammond’s composition. Inspired by its color palette, there is a usage of analogous Rose Doré, Dioxazine Violet, Cadmium Red, Cadmium Orange Hue and complimentary Cadmium Yellow Hue. Under the context of ‘Personal liberation’, the viewer is able to visually comprehend the nature of feeling absolute freedom in self-expression through dance and music.
